Mbarara dairy farmers switch to solar coolers as milk prices dip

A cooperative of 300 dairy farmers in Mbarara has installed solar-powered milk coolers at its collection centres.

The farmers say the coolers have cut milk spoilage by half since they were switched on in June.

Milk prices paid to farmers have dipped this season as supply has risen.

Cooperative leaders say keeping milk fresh lets them sell to processors at better rates.

The coolers were paid for with a loan the cooperative expects to repay within three years.
