Gulu City council passes new market levy after heated debate

Gulu City council has passed a new daily levy on market stalls after a debate that ran late into the evening.

Councillors who backed the levy said the money would pay for drainage and lighting at Gulu Main Market.

Traders who packed the public gallery said the fee would be passed on to shoppers.

A vendors’ association leader said traders had not been consulted before the vote.

The levy takes effect next month. The council says it will review it after six months.
